These ratings are for mass produced dual sport/adventure bikes ONLY, Let’s try to define bike size first. Small – CRF230L, WR250R etc. Medium - DR650, 530EXC etc. Large - 950 Adventure, R1200 GS etc. If you want to split hairs go ahead, not me. I have also tried to make these desert southwest specific. All rides will be a combination of the TRs and the rating assigned will be for the most difficult known/expected section. I understand that it is possible to break up these into percentages of the TRs and on and on…… Just trying to keep it as simple as possible. I would appreciate feedback and input after participating on a ride as it will help improve the system. |

TR1: pavement and graded dirt hard pack - great for new riders - a street bike can do this, literally, a Honda Shadow could do it. |
Trail Rating ONE |
TR2: Sand, gravel and mild ruts. Beginner do-able but a little challenging for short sections. |
Trail Rating TWO |
TR3: Short rocky sections, soft shallow sand, off camber sections and climbs and descents for short distances. Beginners are kind of wondering why anyone would call this fun. This would have been the New Years ride rating. |
Trail rating THREE |
TR4: Longer sections of rough trail - be prepared for sand washes, narrow arroyos, rocks and intermediate ascents and descents, some aggressive vegetation - do-able on a big bike if you have skills but more work than fun and you'll be wanting crash bars and skid plates. Fun on a little bike. Not even remotely beginner friendly. |
Trail rating FOUR |
TR5: Not advised on the big bikes. You'll need some real talent as well as all your body armor, skid plates and knobs. - Plan for washouts, deep arroyos, rocks, ledges, mud, deep soft sand with whoops and sharp turns, ruts, aggressive vegetation and steep terrain - challenging even on a small bike and really, really hard work on a big bike - it will likely go down multiple times and your riding buddies will be really over picking you up (but this is fun, right?).In this rating I avoided “not do-able on big bikes” because someone will try to prove me wrong and then will be pissed when they scratch, bend, or just can’t do what is planned. |

Trail rating FIVE |

TR6: Not gonna happen on an organized run. Reserved for extreme challenges and I dare you’s |
